We explore how training Traditional Weaponry Styles add in the way of interest and mental stimulation to the already involved art of Shaolin Kung Fu. using traditional Weaponry Styles for health and fitness as well as for understanding bare hand defence against weaponry is a very smart way of using something that was developed for war, now used for peace and health.
There are several ways that items that we call weapons can be used; Attacking and Hurting, for Defending and Protecting, as Tools and Implements of Work and for Recreation, Fun and Fitness! And then you can use them in the Shaolin Way, to improve your Bare Hand skills and be able to use your Kung Fu to defend against Bare Hand attackers. We, at the Shaolin Academy Learn and Train Weaponry for Fun, Fitness and Recreation as well ass, at an advanced level, to improve our Bare Hand skills to such a degree that we can defend against a Weaponed Attacker.
When training Traditional Chinese Weaponry at the Shaolin Academy, it is your choice how you will use your skills. No matter your reason, we at the Shaolin Academy seek to provide a safe, comprehensive, accurate and historically correct (within reasonable possibilities) Traditional Chinese Weaponry Education and Training; for Health, Fitness and Wellbeing as well as to improve you Defensive Skills in Martial Art, Kung Fu.
A Chinese Coin Spear on a train, possibly a Tiger Broad Sword scooter or a Red Eagle Spear at the footy may get you arrested nowadays. Most certainly carrying a knife, nunchuku, knuckle dusters or the like concealed will get you detained. In Chinese history, any sort of weapon carried by any other than officials, Emperors soldiers and the very rich would get you in trouble. Yet, the further you were from civilized areas, the less rule of law applied. People needed to protect themselves and went to great lengths to develop weapons that did not look like weapons. Then of course, were those who prayed on people and the easiest way to steal and rob is with a weapon. So too today!.
Yes, we have police but criminals know how to avoid police. Also, many are not really very good with their weapons and martial skills relying on intimidation, shock, and bluff. Of course they have the upper hand, unless you have been robber 100 times and know what to do!
As part of your weapon training, you need to learn how to use a weapon, safely. When you have, you learn how to attack with that weapon, its strengths, limitations, and dangers both using it and being attacked by it. Then you learn how to 'Manage the Situation' according to your personality, skill level and the situation!
It is not really about self defence, but about Situation Management - Sijo Robert ZThe interpretation of this, by the Shaolin, is; do not do harm to any living being willingly, even in defence! Thus, for effective self-defence, that does not cause unnecessary harm, we need to really understand what we are doing and do this well! That is the principle of Mastery.
We at the Shaolin Academy do not follow any particular Religion so it is easy for us to accept all. We do not believe in teaching people how to harm others with bare hands and most certanly not with weaponry but we need to know the techniques and styles to have the confidence and skills to Manage a Situation! In order to manage anything, you need to have an understanding of the issue, style, or problem. To do this, you need to first learn to attack, before you learn to avoid and manage, and this can not be done in a 4 hour quick course.
Well, aside from the defence aspects named above, some of us are a little nuts, and we like playing with shiny toys in a structured and safe environment. No mater if you call this 'Historical Recreations' or Workout with Apparatus or Developing Coordination, Strength and Control or any number of excuses. We like having fun while developing confidence and street life skills.
Although it seems like Tai Chi has cornered the market, training slow movements, in rhythm of the heart, breathing deeply and meditating was actually originally developed in the Shaolin temple. It is part of what we do to use our skills for rhythmic movement to aid relaxation, fitness and . . .rhythm, especially when learning to use Traditional Chinese Weapons. Once we are safe, we coordinate our movements with our breathing and heat beats.
So, come on in and see if what we do is for you!
